Products containing gluten:

Products made with wheat, barley and rye contain gluten. They are used to make breads, cakes, cereals, pastas, cakes, cookies and pizzas. Some other grains containing gluten include

  • Barley, Graham flour, faro, Spelt, Kamut – ancient wheat, Durum, wheat germ, wheat bran and semolina should be avoided.
  • Most of the soy sauces include wheat.
  • Self basting poultry, marinades and coating mix contain gluten.
  • Sausages contain rusk and the machines used to make sausages are often cleaned with bread.

  • In addition to food products, some cosmetic items like lipstick, gloss and balms contain gluten. Sometimes, prescription or over the counter medications may also include gluten.

You may be overwhelmed with the list of products that contain gluten. It seems all the foods include some amount of gluten. However, there are gluten free products that are safe to be included in your diet.

  • Buckwheat, rice, potato flour, arrowroot, soy, millet, corn and flax can be used to prepare good gluten free diets.
  • Flours made from seeds, beans and nuts can be consumed.
  • Fresh fruits like apple, banana and orange are free from gluten.
  • Vegetables, spinach, lettuce, sweet potato and tofu can be taken in large quantities.
  • Unflavored milk, yogurts, butter, margarine, cottage cheese and cream cheese do not contain gluten.
  • Fresh fish, poultry and beef can be included in your gluten free diet.
  • If you want to binge on something like cookies and cakes, try good alternatives like potato chips, pop corns and peanuts. You can take rice crackers and rice cakes.
  • You can use potato starch flour to provide softness to the mix.
  • Teff grains are not only free from gluten, but they are also rich in calcium, iron, zinc and potassium.
